A letter to my granddaughter

Guess you heard that 68% of "the youth vote" went to Obama.

My granddaughter called this morning and told me she was one of them.

I replied to her with this e-mail:

The election of Obama comes down to this. Your grandmother and I, your mother and dad too, have been productive wage earning tax payers who will likely have their taxes significantly increased under Obama. This means less income.

It’s also likely that universal healthcare will be created causing those that have money to help pay for those who have little or no money. Your grandmother’s and my taxes will go up to help pay for universal heathcare.

Less income during our golden years means we will have to cut back on our basic purchases, gifts and discretionary spending.

What is the economic effect of Obama's election on you personally? We’ve often helped you and the other grandkids not only with gifts for your birthday and Christmas and also for some financial support for you to attend college.

Essentially by your vote you’ve chosen another family over ours for help. So in the future, if you need assistance for college, please call 202/456-1111. That's the telephone number for the Office of the President of the United States . I'm sure Mr. Obama will be happy to send a check from his personal or business accounts.

We will continue to give you a birthday and Christmas gift.

Finally, congratulations on your choice to vote for Obama. For future reference, however, you might attempt to add up all you've received from us, your mom & dad and other relatives, and then compare it to what you expect to get over the next four years from President Obama..

We love you but don't forget to call the number listed above when you need financial help. We wish we could continue to help you but living pretty much on a fixed income now we just won't have extra money when our taxes go up.

Love,

Granddad

It's tragic that Internet Granddad will lose his Hispanic cleaning lady, but to get his taxes raised at all by Obama, he would have to make over $250,000 a year. Given the state of the country, and the unbelievable free ride he's had under Bush, I just don't feel much sympathy for him. My grandparents have somehow always made it without cleaning ladies!

Just to show the facts again, here's a good graph of Obama's tax plan compared with McCain's:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2008/06/09/ST2008060900950.html

It's pretty simple - the Republicans lied about Obama (and Hillary's) tax plans, and middle class Midwesterners with access to accurate information saw through the lie and voted Democrat. It wasn't just the youth - it was almost every major demographic. They saw that the Democrats wanted to cut taxes for everyone making less than $100k by a larger amount than McCain, who instead wanted to give an even bigger break to the highest earning 5%. They didn't fall for the lie that the Democrats were going to screw small, middle class businesses. They looked at the numbers and made up their own mind about what was best for them instead of listening to the Republicans, who have let them down again and again.

The tragedy, though, is that not only has the Republican's "trickle-down economy" failed the Midwest for the last 10 years, and not only has their incompetence in Iraq left our military exhausted in a dangerous world, but their idiotic deregulation of the finance industry (the geniuses Granddad calls "productive"?) has now left us with a 10 trillion dollar debt that no tax cut or hike can even begin to budge (and we're probably only halfway to the bottom of the asset crisis). We're going to have to pay for it, and our own grandkids are going to have to pay for it, with poorer schools and probably lousier health care. Wealthy Internet Granddads won't have to deal with our national debt -- so they don't think about it.

Thanks for voting for Bush all those years, Internet Granddad, and thanks for sharing your family email. You are a complete jackass. It's a good thing your granddaughter Lauren can now vote Democrat for her own grandkids -- I hope they can dig us out of your hole.
