The president of ParentalRights.org is urging parents to show their support for a parental rights amendment in Congress.

The amendment, called House Joint Resolution 42, states that parents have the fundamental right to direct the upbringing and education of their children. It also maintains that no state, treaty, or international law -- nor the U.S. government -- may infringe upon this right.

Mike Farris of ParentalRights.org says the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child will take away the rights of parents if it is ratified by Congress -- something he believes could happen as early as mid-year.

"If people will stand up [for parents] and call for international law to be stopped and parental rights to be protected, we're going to win," he contends. "But if people remain silent, we not only will not pass this amendment, but the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child will be shoved down our throats and will radically change all parenting as we know it in this country."

According to a CBC report, a Quebec father was recently successfully sued by his 12-year-old daughter after he grounded her in the summer of 2008. The daughter had been grounded after her father confronted her on her Internet usage.

Opponents of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child believe such lawsuits would be commonplace if the treaty is ratified.
